Many people celebrate this day by sending cards or letters, or flowers. Some people use the occasion to present lavish gifts, such as jewelry, chocolates, teddy bears, perfume etc. Everyone wants make their Valentine’s Day memorable but almost peoples did not know the history behind this day.
History behind this day did not start out as such. It began in Rome when, the Emperor, Claudius who was called “Cruel” involved in many bloody and unpopular campaigns. He was having a difficult time getting soldiers to join his military leagues. He wanted a strong army but many men did not want to be soldiers. Claudius thought the men wanted to stay home to be with their wives and children instead of leaving to fight wars. So Claudius thought of an awful solution to his problem. He decided to cancel all marriages. “No one in all of Rome could get married” Claudius thought. That if the men couldn’t get married; then they would ignore the women and want to be soldiers.
Saint Valentine, who was a priest in Rome, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine’s actions were discovered, he was sentenced to be beaten to death with clubs and to have his head cut off.
While in prison, it is believed that Valentine fell in love with a young girl, who may have been his jailor’s daughter, who visited him during his confinement. Before his death on the 14th day of February, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter.
In his last letter to the jailer’s daughter, he signed it “From your Valentine”. Which is where this day got this name? Valentine was killed on the 14th of February. We celebrate Valentine’s Day on February 14th in honor of Saint Valentine.
