Featuring Fashion Designer Ammara Khan and her Muse, Hotelier Iqraa Mansha
The Muses in Greek mythology are the goddesses of literary, scientific and artistic inspiration. The Designer-Muse relationship has made its way to Pakistani Fashion, with some mind blowing results.
Iqraa is a person I admire for her unique and innate sense of style and love for fashion, but also because she is a great wife and mother and a successful business woman. She personifies the modern woman of today and has a hato of positive energy surrounding her that is almost magnetic. She’s a patron of the arts and has impeccable taste. So it’s great fun to design for someone who appreciates originality like I do and is a perfectionist, too. These things are a prerequisite when working with Iqraa. She never wants something I’ve already made! It’s always something that’s still a dream, or a vision and that’s where it all begins. When we work together, she pushes me and draws out raw creativity in me. Sure enough, the end result is an impeccable couture piece. I had many sleepless nights when I was designing and finishing this black beaded gown [pictured]. I was not living in Pakistan at the time, but traveled to Lahore every six weeks for five months to oversee the production! It was completely worth it.
What I love most about Ammara Khan is that she gets individuality. Everyone does not want to be a clone or slave to trends, and does not always fit into a brands look or what is a designers conception of style. Every garment of Ammara’s is unique and aeries her philosophy in a subtle way. She is one of the few designers that truly understands that couture is not embodied in replication, but in creation – and creation from scratch to compliment the person that you are designing for. I feel Ammara has an eye for perfection and detailing to another level. Both of us place a lot of importance on cut, placement, colour and technique, and she balances all these aspects in her design. I think the credit goes to her immense passion for what she does, as well as her qualifications and training at Fashion Institute of Technology. I have truly loved working with her and each time the end result has been a garment that I have not only loved wearing but will totally treasure!
